Understanding Chills And Getting The Right Treatment

Chills are usually associated with fever. The word itself refers to a feeling of being cold and shivering. This is caused due to a rapid process of contracting and relaxing of the muscles in the body. When the body detects that a fever may be setting in, it contracts and relaxes the muscles rapidly in order to bring up the body heat and fight the fever.

What Causes Fever and Chills

Chills are usually caused due to exposure to a very cold environment or an infection, either bacterial or viral. It is very important to get medical attention as soon as you or a family member starts feeling ill. Children are often more prone to chills because they usually develop higher fevers than adults. If your child is below a year old, call a doctor immediately because it could lead to a very bad illness if not treated as soon as possible.

A lot of people confuse chills with Goose bumps. While goose bumps are similar, they only occur due to cold air. They are usually brought on by strong emotions that are related to fear or shock. In most cases, the hair on the skin will stand up when you get goose bumps in order to form a layer of insulation to the body. While chills may be accompanied by goose bumps, it does not always happen the other way around.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you or your child is only suffering from a mild fever and there are no other side effects, all that is probably needed is a lot of rest and relaxation. Drink a lot of fluids and let your body get well naturally. However, if the chills accompanied by any other side effects like shortness of breath, abdominal pain or a bad cough, it is worth seeking medical attention to find out what the problem is. Young children should also be taken to a medical professional immediately if they have a fever that crosses 101 degrees.

When you visit the doctor, expect to be asked questions based on the chills as well as other factors. Ideally keep a record of information like how often the chills have come on, how long they have lasted, the highest temperature your body has gone to and whether there have been any other symptoms along with the chills. The more accurate the answers, the quicker it will be for the doctor to diagnose the problem. A physical examination of the eyes, nose, neck, throat and abdomen may also be conducted.

Benefits Of Chiropractic: How It Helps You

Chiropractic care is becoming more and more popular in America and for a number of reasons. Whether you decide to get treated for a particular problem or you just want to improve your overall health, this form of treatment can help you in a number of ways.

Fall Ill Less Often

While measuring over 100 individuals who had been given regular chiropractic care, it was found that, on an average, they had a 200% stronger immune system than those who do not get chiropractic treatment. A better immune system means fewer colds and less missing out on work.

Aim to Stay Healthy

Don’t you feel good when you know that someone is continuously striving to make you feel healthy all the time? These doctors get a lot of training in various areas like anatomy, nutrition, rehabilitation and physiology. Some of them may even have focused on these subjects more than regular doctors. With this knowledge and experience, they aim to keep you in good health.

Minimize the Drugs and Hospital Visits

This form of care has been seen to reduce drugs and hospital costs by over 50%. This is a huge reduction in the average amount of money that a person has to spend when they visit the emergency room or buy medicine to get rid of a problem.

Save Your Money

As mentioned in the above point, chiropractic treatment could help you save a lot of money. Chiropractors usually work out to be a lot more cost effective than going to a doctor and being prescribed some expensive medicine. If your back ache can be taken care of without pumping drugs into your system, you will save money and allow your body to heal in the most natural way possible.

Get Better Sleep

This treatment has been seen to improve the sleeping patterns of children as well as adults. Many people around the country suffer from the chronic sleeping disorder that can affect their entire life if not addressed. This problem can be reduced through chiropractic care.

Have Better Moods

Even though it may sound unusual that a spinal adjustment technique can change your mood, studies have found that this form of treatment can, in fact, make you happier. By decreasing the amount of cortisol in the body and raising the level of good hormones, many patients experience a better balance of hormones in their body and it can result in an overall improvement of mood. This is why chiropractic care is often suggested for people suffering from depression or anxiety.

More Relief from Pain

Chiropractic adjustments can often help to relieve pain in the body. Pain often occurs when the spine has been misaligned, either because of some condition or due to an accident. When this happens, it can cause a lot of discomfort. A chiropractor will help to adjust the spine and reduce the pain.

Walking to Find Great Finds

After seeing myself in some very unflattering pictures, I decided it was time for me to lose weight. Living in a large city where parks are rather far away, I found myself having to drive to the park just to take a walk around a large spacious area. To me, it felt like driving was defeating the purpose. So one day I decided that instead of driving to the grocery store a mile away, I would simply walk; after all, I was only going to get a few things.

As a lifelong resident of my city, I thought I knew all the best stores and places of interest to patronize until I started my daily walks. Rather than walk on the main streets, I opted to walk on the side streets, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. On my first walk I came across a small cafĂ© nettled between a row of brownstone homes. I eagerly wanted to stop and sample a fresh cup of flavored coffee but I had to continue my walk. I entered the store’s phone number into my cell phone to make a note to stop in one day.

A few blocks later on a tiny curvy street I came across a store that had some very nice dresses displayed in the window. I was very surprised to find that the store had the exact dress that I had paid one hundred dollars for at a department store. Had I known the store existed, I could have saved fifty dollars and purchased a matching purse as well. Once again I entered the store’s phone number into my cell phone and continued my walk.

Thirty minutes later when I reached my local grocery store I realized that I had actually enjoyed my walk. I felt like I was sightseeing in my city for the first time. I found two stores that I will definitely visit in the future. It was a wonderful adventure that I enjoyed very much. So much that I started to take walks every day for exercise and to explore my city and see what other treasures it holds.

The treasures that I have found so far include an historical landmark that I had once read about in a magazine, an antique shop and a mom and pop bookstore. Most importantly, I have lost some weight, which was my main goal in the first place. Had I been driving, I would never have found any of these places. My exercise has paid off in more ways than one. Now, through walking regularly, I get the exercise that I need and I can feed my shopping habit as well.

Health And Fitness

Health is of great significance to a person since it dictates the individual’s level of productivity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are three determinants of health, which include the physical environment, the social and economic environment, and a person’s behavior and characteristics. For starters, physical environment influences the health of individuals in several ways. Healthy workplaces, clean air, safe water, houses, roads, and communities all are instrumental in bringing about good health. Studies have shown that workplace environment plays a critical role in molding one’s health from several angles. It is true that employed persons are usually healthier than their unemployed counterparts; nonetheless, it has been proven that night shifts can bear adverse effects on bodily functions. On the other hand, if the work environment is noisy or stressful, workers get stressed up and find it hard to relax when they are away from work, which often brings about sleeping difficulties. Monotony of work is also not healthy for workers.

Additionally, dirty, dangerous and noisy work can bear an emotional and physical impact on workers that will lead to long-term complications. The socio-economic environment also plays a critical role in determining the health of individuals. Higher social status and income are linked to better health. This fact is so because the richer one is, the greater the access to better health facilities as one has the resources to spend on such lavish amenities. Low levels of learning are associated with lower self-confidence, more stress, and poor health. Social support networks play an integral role in determining health. Greater support from friends, communities and families often lead to better health. Family beliefs, traditions, and customs all bear and impact on health: thus, the need to keep an eye on them. The third factor that influences health is a person’s behavior and characteristics. Genetics plays a fundamental role in determining the chances of developing certain illnesses and lifespan in general, both of which are indicators of a person’s state of health.

Personal coping skills and behavior, which entails keeping active, balanced eating, drinking, smoking, and how we tackle life’s challenges and stresses all impact health. It is, therefore, critical to understand how to optimize the activities in a person’s life, which involves avoiding certain habits such as substance abuse while engaging all the more in others such as physical exercise, healthy eating, etc. Studies have shown that it is quite tough to alter individual behavior. Though instances exist where a change of behavior has been accomplished, the debate about the extent to which health can be enhanced by targeting personal behavior is still ongoing. Many models and theories have been formulated in an attempt to give a reason for the health behaviors that are exhibited by various individuals.

One of the major problems that promoters of public health encounter is the failure of different people to follow advice on how to live healthy lifestyles. It could be because of ignorance or the belief that health is in large part determined by external factors. By increasing health education and advice, these two problems can be solved, and more people can start taking control of their lives. If such an initiative is taken, then we are likely to have a more healthy population in just a few weeks’ time.

A Guide To Choosing The Right Pediatrician

You may be enjoying the stage of being pregnant or you may have already welcomed a new little life into this world. Whichever way, this time is a very exciting one but there are a number of responsibilities that need to be taken care of. Besides selecting the name and baby-proofing the house, it is also very important to choose a good pediatrician for your child so that his or her medical needs are taken care of properly.

Know your Own Philosophies

Every set of parents has different ideas about bringing up their babies. Right from vaccinations to breastfeeding and co-sleeping, parents have different philosophies and so do doctors. It is important that you know exactly what you want for your child. Even though it is not a bad thing to be open to different labels as a parent or different ways to bring up your kids, it is a good idea to know your stand (as well as your partner’s) on certain basic issues regarding the child before you choose a pediatrician. This could help to make your search a lot easier.

Ask People you Trust

Before visiting the pediatrician, ask people to suggest pediatricians in the area. If you have grown up in the area you can always ask your parents or family members. Friends can also help out, especially if they have children of their own. You could also talk to mothers in the neighborhood or those you meet in the vicinity because they are most likely to know the good pediatricians around your location.

Meet With Them

The best way to choose any kind of medical professional is to meet with them. Usually, you will know right from the beginning if you feel comfortable with them or not. You should also ask yourself if you feel comfortable in the office. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Find out whether they are on the same page as you when it comes to the basics in bringing up your child. Talk to the staff and just figure out if you think the whole place feels right.

Check them Out

Meeting with a doctor may help you decide whether you get a good vibe from a person but everything they say can’t be taken at face value. No doctor will tell you their shortcomings or warn you about their faults. Before you choose a pediatric doctor to take care of your child, it is worth searching for them online and asking people around for their opinion about the person. You will probably find a lot of reviews and opinions which you should factor into your decision making process.
